On behalf of the Undergraduate Business Council and the more than 4,500 undergraduates at the McCombs School of Business, I want to sincerely thank you for enabling us to continue to put on quality programming year after year. The motto of our great university is “Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis” or for those of you whose Latin may be a little rusty “A cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy.” It’s a line from a quote by the second president of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar. The quote continues on with, “and while guided and controlled by virtue, [it is] the noblest attribute of man. It is the only dictator that free men acknowledge and the only security that free men desire.” Too often I hear people say that we merely go to school so we can go on to get a job, but this a cynical and short-sighted outlook. Lamar’s quote reminds us that we are here for something more than that. Our university is here to transform lives for the benefit of our society. Every year, thousands of graduates of the McCombs school go out into the workforce and into the world and at the daily level make small but real change in the world. Since 1958 the Undergraduate Business Council has strived to help better fulfill this mission, by providing McCombs undergraduates with the opportunity and community they need to develop that cultivated mind Lamar praises.
Our 101 members directly put on our over 50 programs and events which strengthen McCombs by fostering active discussion and interaction between students, faculty members, and sponsoring companies. We are proud to say that our programs effectively reach more students than any other single organization at The University of Texas. We have been recognized on a university-wide level for our achievements in a variety of categories ranging from organizational ethics to academics, to even previously being named the Most Outstanding Organization at the University.
Through your generous gift to the McCombs School of Business, we can continually challenge undergraduate students to dig deeper while assisting in the initiatives you are undertaking. Whether you are looking to connect with internship and full-time talent or just seek greater awareness for your firm, we look forward to partnering with you in the 2016-2017 school year!
